The Hosmer Grove Loop Trail travels through the remains of an experimental commercial forestry project from the 1920s. Ralph Hosmer introduced 86 species of trees, and less than 20 remain today including pine, spruce, cedar, and eucalyptus. The short trail contains an abundance of trees and also travels though a short section of native shrubland. There are some Hawaiian honeycreeper birds here found nowhere else on earth. Hikers may want to also do the Supply Trail in the vicinity.

Map

Trailhead: Drive to the entrance gate to Haleakalā National Park, pay the fee, and drive less than a quarter mile. Find the road to the Hosmer Grove Campground on your left (east). Drive to the end of the road and find the parking lot. There is a pit toilet. If parking is full, drive back down the road and park at the trailhead for the Supply Trail.

Weather

Gear: You won’t need much for this short trail. Sturdy shoes are appropriate.

Hike: Take the short loop through the forest. There is a connector trail in the middle of the loop for a bit more hiking. The views up toward Haleakalā on a clear day are fantastic. Finish the loop and return to the parking area.
